Shackleton Exhibition, Terminal Building, Dún Laoghaire Harbour,
Add a fascinating visit to your Christmas day out in Dún Laoghaire by paying a visit to the remarkable Shackleton exhibition telling the story of one of our country’s greatest ever explorers. Tailored for visitors of all ages, the exhibition tells a survival story like no other: Irish-born explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic expedition of 1914-1917. Today it’s rightly seen as perhaps the most remarkable in exploration history: a tale of extraordinary leadership—of the triumph of the human heart and spirit when faced with the most terrible odds. But it was years before its true significance emerged.
On display are over 150 photographs taken by the Expedition photographer Frank Hurley, a full size exact replica of the James Caird; the lifeboat that proved so critical to the rescue, and much, much more. After visiting the exhibition, you’ll understand that it truly was a ‘Triumph against all odds’.
Santa’s Arctic Kingdom, Dún Laoghaire Shopping Centre opens Saturday 1st December
A spectacular Santa experience opens in Dún Laoghaire Shopping Centre on the 1st of December. The magnificent 6000 Sq foot Santa’s Arctic Kingdom will take pride of place on the Centre’s top floor.
Children are set to travel from across Ireland for this unforgettable adventure, inviting them to follow in the footsteps of Ernest Shackleton when they embark on a special adventure from the South Pole to the North Pole.
The excitement will build when they stumble across Mr. Elf who is lost … he needs their help to find his way back to the North Pole in time to help Santa get all the toys ready for Christmas. The thrilling journey will bring them past ice bergs, polar bears and the Ice Queen’s Palace before they eventually arrive in Santa’s Workshop where all the toys are made.
And then it’s time to visit Santa Claus himself in his Polar residence to receive a very special gift and a photograph to remember the occasion.
Santa will take up residence in his Arctic Kingdom from 1pm on December 1st, before departing for a special escorted cavalcade to the Harbour Plaza to arrive for the official launch of the Christmas festival at 5.15pm.
