Dún Laoghaire Shopping Centre revamp gets the go-ahead

12. 07. 2016

According to the ‘Irish Times’, planning permission has been granted for a €10 million redevelopment of the Dún Laoghaire Shopping Centre that should be completed by the second quarter of 2017.

The centre’s owner, Coltard, intends to create two large anchor stores fronting on to the Dublin harbour town’s Marine Road and George’s Street. The proposed Georges Street anchor store extends to 3,262 square metres over two levels while the Marine Road anchor extends to approximately 1,825 sq m.

Dún Laoghaire Shopping Centre extends to 17,000 sq m and it currently has over 45 tenants. The centre has a yearly rent roll of €2 million. Grocery chain SuperValu currently anchors the property, while other tenants include New Look, Specsavers and Lifestyle Sports. Tesco Ireland, the local arm of the British retailer, has its Irish headquarters in a 40,000sq ft office above the centre.

Opened in 1976, as Ireland’s first multi-storey covered shopping centre, the property underwent an internal renovation in 2009. It currently has an average footfall of 65,000 people per week, which should rise once the new anchor stores commence trading.

“We have been in close talks with a number of parties for these superb spaces and getting the grant moves us a step closer to taking Dún Laoghaire back to its rightful position as one of the ‘go to shopping destinations’ in South County Dublin,” said Jason Miller, director of Murphy Mulhall, the centre’s agents and property manager.
