George’s St is just 200 years old. Many of the earlier retailers made their own goods on the premises. Maria Byrne sold straw bonnets. Laurence Reck and Thomas Purcell each sold nails. Richard Yeates was a cutler. And there were numerous retailers of food, wine and spirits.
Home and Colonial, Findlaters, McCullaghs, Liptons, Woolworths, Winstons, Lees, Iceland, Marks and Spencer, Atlantic, Wimpy and many other big national and international retailers came and went over the years, but the majority of the shops were always locally owned – and so they remain to this day.
The free guided tour will cover much of the history and locations of the shops, and of the people who served in them.
Meet at the entrance to the Old Town Hall, Marine Road, Dún Laoghaire.
