The Impact of Brexit on the Dublin Food Industry

While the impacts of Brexit are still unclear, there is certainty that it will affect every Dublin food business in one way, or another.

Some impacts will be largely positive, while others could be damaging. The upcoming Dublin Food Chain event in the Studio, DLR Lexicon on June 12th (from 5.30pm-8pm) will see a panel of experts debate the potential pros and cons of this significant milestone, and most importantly the event will attempt to highlight opportunities that can be created through Brexit.

Speaker One: Mary Morrissey, Senior Manager, Food & Beverages, Bord Bia- ‘The Impact of Brexit & the Bord Bia approach”

Brexit has been described as the biggest challenge the food industry has ever faced. Mary will speak about the possible areas of impact and how Bord Bia is approaching this challenge to prepare the industry.

Speaker Two: Catherine Buggy, Owner, Boutique Bake- “Export Outside of the UK…a Real Case Study”

Boutique Bake produces a delicious range, of easy-to-use, natural baking mixes for retail.

Catherine began trading in farmers markets in 2013, and secured Boutique Bake’s first supermarket listing in June 2014. Since then, she has grown the number of stores stocking her range to 350, all around Ireland. In 2016, she was nominated for the Image Young Business Woman of the Year and was delighted to be a runner-up in Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur in Dublin City. Her Boutique Bake product range can also be found in the UK, Bahrain, France, Germany, and even Australia.

Discussion will focus on:

Speaker Three: Anne Kelly, Finance Director, Bewley’s Tea & Coffee Limited – “Brexit – Minimising the impact from the “Unknown”

With so much uncertainty surrounding the Brexit process, Anne will provide an insight into how businesses such as Bewley’s need to be planning and preparing now, in order to be able to respond to the challenges that will inevitably arise from Brexit.

The format for this event will differ slightly from the normal Dublin Food Chain presentation. Each guest speaker will present for 10 minutes to give a wider perspective, and this will be followed by a panel discussion involving the panel itself and the participants.
